As we reported earlier Friday morning, two Walnut Creek women walking in the area of Oak Grove Road and Walnut Avenue Friday were struck and critically injured by a motorist who police say apparently did not see them in a crosswalk.
The accident, reported at 8:35 a.m., is the latest in a string of accidents involving pedestrians – two of which have been fatal.
Police Lt. Lanny Edwards reported that the two women, both Walnut Creek residents in their 60’s, were transported to John Muir Hospital where they are both listed in critical condition.
The driver (a female in her 20’s residing in Walnut Creek) was not injured. She is cooperating with investigators and at this time, there are no obvious indications of criminal behavior (e.g. DUI, texting while driving, speed, etc.), Edwards said.
The investigation continues, but Edwards said preliminary indications are that the pedestrians were in the crosswalk and not seen by the driver. The southbound lane of Oak Grove Road between Filbert and Walnut Avenue is closed while the Central County Major Accident Investigations Team (MAIT) investigates. The road is expected to reopen between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. today.
The location is near Northgate High School but none of the involved parties have any association with the school.
