Two teenage girls from Martinez were killed during a solo-vehicle collision this morning in unincorporated Contra Costa County, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The CHP is reporting the teens were passengers in the vehicle, which crashed into a tree just before 3 a.m.
Investigators said the three appeared to have been wearing seat belts. The road is signed for 45 miles per hour.
The teenage driver, who suffered major injuries, said she was going about 60 mph while traveling on eastbound Franklin Canyon Road, west of McHarry Ranch Road and may have fallen asleep, according to the CHP.
Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor in this crash, the CHP said.
