Martinez residents snapped a few photos of their landmark county courthouse building – now the County Finance Building – as the grand old Grey Lady prepares for a facelift estimated to take until Spring of next year.
The former courthouse was completed in 1901. It was designed by William S. Mooser & Son and was constructed by the firm of Havens & Toepke.
The building originally had a central tower, which proved impractical and which officials deemed potentially dangerous in light of the failure of similar structures during the 1906 Quake and Fire in San Francisco. It was later removed.
If you like old architecture and county history, you may get a charge out of knowing the landmark is getting some attention.
Love those old buildings.
We do, too…
The older buildings look so much grander than the new ones. Just saying.
They had style.
So glad I got out of jury duty earlier this year and can’t be called back again for awhile.
Oldest building in the county?
