A man found hanging from a bed sheet while in custody for robbery at the Martinez Detention Facility has been identified as 38-year-old Keith Chapman of Walnut Creek.
Chapman was discovered hanging from a sheet in his room at about 4:32 p.m. on Saturday by a jail deputy conducting room checks, according to a release issued by the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff. Chapman was described as unresponsive and not breathing. The deputy notified jail medical staff and started CPR with medical personnel taking over life-saving measures when they arrived.
The fire department and an ambulance also responded. Chapman was eventually pronounced dead at the scene.
The Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff and the D.A.’s Office are continuing to investigate this incident per the sheriff’s in-custody death protocol.
Chapman was originally booked by the Walnut Creek Police Department on November 11, 2014 for robbery. He was also being held on a parole violation and for possessing a weapon at the jail.
An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.
