Lafayette police trailed a car reported stolen during a residential burglary in Daly City early Friday and found themselves in a high-speed pursuit with the car – during which a gun and ammunition were jettisoned onto Highway 24 before the occupants eventually managed to elude officers in Oakland.
The brief but harrowing chase kicked off around 11:30 a.m. Friday after police spotted the 2012 silver Scion in downtown Lafayette, determined it was stolen, and followed it onto westbound Highway 24 with the driver reaching speeds of 90 mph in an effort to elude pursuers.
Surrounding agencies were made aware of the chase but the Scion made it through the Caldecott Tunnel after a female passenger threw a .38 caliber pistol and ammunition out the window and onto the freeway near the Lafayette/Orinda border.
Those items were later recovered by police. Officers terminated their pursuit after the car disappeared into downtown Oakland after taking the College Ave. offramp from Highway 24. The car was later found abandoned by Oakland police.
