A man sleeping in his car on Bear Creek Road north of the Briones Overlook was awakened by a man with a gun at his window early Thursday morning – and ended up surrendering the car and his possessions to the interloper.
East Bay Regional Park District police said the victim was awakened sometime between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. after he fell asleep in a turnout on park land.
EBRPD Police Lt. Alan Love said the man was awakened by a tapping on his window, was shown a silver semi-automatic handgun and told to get out of his car. He did, and saw his grey 2007 Nissan Altima driving away with his belongings inside.
The victim managed to walk out of the area and eventually contacted Orinda police, Love said. He was uninjured in the encounter. Love said it was not immediately known how the gunman reached the isolated area as no other car was seen.
