A stubborn 4-alarm grass fire came a little too close for comfort for some homeowners on Natalie Drive in Moraga Thursday, Moraga-Orinda Fire Protection District firefighters moving swiftly to rebuff encroaching flames.

The rare 4th alarm was called in the area around 2:30 p.m. Thursday as the fire, in the neighborhood across the street and to the east of Campolindo High School, briefly threatened some nearby homes before it churned over the hill in the direction of Lafayette.

MOFD Fire Chief Stephen Healy said that between 30 to 40 acres were burned.

Fire apparatus from CalFire and surrounding fire districts turned out for the 3rd Alarm. It was not immediately known what ignited the blaze and the cause remains under investigation at this time. Healy said one MOFD firefighter suffered a minor injury while fighting the fire.

At least two air tankers circled overhead during the height of the firefighting effort, making retardant drops until they were called off the fire at around 2 p.m.

Thursday’s fire was the latest in a string of fires to concern residents from Lamorinda to the San Ramon Valley.
