Two people were eventually taken into custody after a brief but high-speed chase from Lafayette to Walnut Creek Tuesday.

The incident kicked off shortly around 2:30 p.m. after a Lafayette police officer fell in behind a maroon Lexus SUV on Mt. Diablo Blvd., noting that the rear window of the car had been broken out. A check of the plates revealed that the car had been reported stolen earlier in Walnut Creek.

But the officer didn’t have a chance to interview the man and woman inside the car as the male driver gunned it onto southbound I-680, reaching speeds upwards of 90 mph. Witnesses said the woman passenger thrust her hands out the passenger side window while her companion attempted to elude pursuing officers – eventually pulling over on South Main Street offramp just minutes after the pursuit was initiated.

Police took the pair into custody at that point and determined that both had outstanding warrants. NEWS24-680 will have more on the story as details emerge. No one was injured during the pursuit or arrest.
