Lafayette police describe a rare, takeover-style robbery at a local store.

Two people were arrested by Orinda police after a reported hit and run on Charles Hill Road turned into a roaring car fire and brief chase Thursday.

Orinda Police Chief Mark Nagel said the car was seen fleeing the area of Charles Hill Road leaking fluid after a hit and run encounter shortly after 8 a.m. The Acura Integra 2 door hatchback – confirmed as stolen – caught fire and burned in the area of 9 Charles Hill as the two occupants fled on foot towards Lafayette.

Moraga-Orinda Fire District firefighters arrived and extinguished the blaze.

Orinda and Lafayette officers located the two individuals who were separated and walking in different directions, Nagel said.  A search of the suspects revealed numerous burglary tools and drug paraphernalia.

The chief said Daniel Gilkison, 33, of San Francisco and Jessica Borden, 34, with a last known address in Oklahoma, were found in possession of identification and personal property not their own.

Nagel credited the response of witnesses with the swift resolution of the incident.
