A Moraga man was among a small group of people taken into custody in Benicia earlier this week after a resident spotted them allegedly stealing a neighbor’s kayak.

Thomas Gorrell, 36, of Moraga, was arrested along with Robert Correa, 27, of Hayward, and Betty Boyd, 45, of Napa, on suspicion of possession of the stolen kayak, with all three facing additional conspiracy charges and probation violations, according to police.

Investigators said officers responded to the 1100 block of West K Street at 7:58 p.m. Tuesday after the resident reported that someone was stealing a neighbor’s kayak. Police said the witness told them the suspects had taken the kayak and were loading it onto a waiting vehicle.

Officers found four people around the vehicle and allegedly with the kayak at the scene. Gorrell, Correa, and Boyd were all taken into custody, according to police.

Benicia police said they were looking into whether the trio were responsible for other crimes in the area, specifically a residential burglary recorded on Monday.
