Several eastbound lanes of Highway 24 east of the Pleasant Hill Road onramp were closed early Sunday after a multi-car crash brought emergency crews on the run. Three lanes were closed for roughly an hour while crews attempted to reach at least one injured motorist and clear the highway of debris.

The crash was reported at 3 a.m. A SigAlert closing three lanes of the highway was declared at 3:12 a.m. as California Highway Patrol officers attempted to determine the cause of the crash. At least two vehicles appeared to have suffered major damage in the crash, officers reported, and Contra Costa County Fire Protection District firefighters had a difficult time extricated injured motorists from the wreckage.

One person was transported to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek with major injuries and CHP officers arrested another person on unspecified charges after the collision, CHP Officer Eric Anderson said.

All lanes of the highway were reopened at 5:19 a.m.
