LAMORINDA: Power Restored (Slowly) After Moraga Outage

Lots of candlelight dining in Moraga and parts of Orinda Thursday after a power transformer near the Moraga Library said: “I’m done” and turned out the lights for thousands of residents at 8:12 p.m.

A very nice presentation on the Caldecott Tunnel given by a couple of local authors at the library’s history room was cut short after the transformer outside began to hum “very loudly” and then failed completely, attendees said. The ground below the transformer briefly caught fire, according to first responders on the scene.

Power was restored to most areas by 10 p.m. but a few blacked out neighborhoods soldiered on into the night with flashlights or candles.

Saint Mary’s Road and Rheem Boulevard were both shut down as firefighters and PG&E crews fought the small grass fire and worked to get the grid back online.

We want to thank the thousands of you who followed us via Facebook and Twitter, our only method of staying in touch with you all as we lost power, as well.(See what being “local” means? We suffer with you!)

Thank you for all your information and words of encouragement.

  1. It’s true!

We had no power and I had to text a friend and tell her to go to your facebook page to find out what was going on and let me know!

    • Appreciate your kind words. We were dealing with Dixie Cups and string but we managed to get the word out. Thanks for reading…

  2. Hmmm. It’s going to be interesting to see what happens when the big one comes. Aside from a robo call from PG&E this site was the only one providing updates through this incident.

  3. Funniest moment of the outage was on another local blog where an excited Camino Pablo resident sent out an urgent alert that the power was out. Really?
