An accident involving several vehicles on Interstate Highway 680 just south of Highway 24 in Walnut Creek early Monday morning shut down three lanes of the heavily used commuter route.

Busy Highway Patrol officers, dealing with this crash and an unrelated incident in the eastbound bore of the Caldecott Tunnel, said at least five cars appeared to have been caught up in the I-680 incident – reported at roughly 5:50 a.m. Their investigation continues as to its cause and there was no immediate word of any injuries.

A traffic alert for the key commuter route was issued at 6:09, effectively closing down the southbound lanes after the collision, according to the California Highway Patrol, and remaining in effect until it was canceled at 6:59 a.m.
