LAFAYETTE: Computer Thieves Target Elementary School – Again

Lafayette police describe a rare, takeover-style robbery at a local store.

Police in Lafayette said computer thieves have twice targeted the computer room at Lafayette Elementary School in recent months – most recently on Thanksgiving morning when thieves made off with more than 20 mainly Apple iMacs.

Investigators said police were notified that something was amiss at the school on Moraga Road at 2:13 a.m. Thanksgiving morning, arriving to find a black equipment cart abandoned on School Street on the southern edge of the school and surmising that the thief or thieves had used the cart to transport the 21.5″ and 27″ computers – all bearing school property tags and ID numbers etched into the monitor stands – to a vehicle parked nearby.

A dollar amount was not put on the loss, but police said the Thanksgiving break-in was similar in method to another at the school on Oct. 23, when thieves gained access to the computer room in the early morning hours and made off with a similar haul.

Police asked for any information on suspicious cars or people in the area at the time of the burglaries and advised prospective buyers to be aware of the property markings on the computers and to report anyone trying to sell one.
