Friends and family of a popular local businessman and veteran mourned his loss this weekend after fire overwhelmed him in the Avocado Court residence he has inhabited the past 40 years. Doug Trampetti, 69, was found inside the burning home Saturday. He was later declared dead at a local hospital.
Trampetti, an Army veteran and East Bay car salesman, had been in declining health for some years after heart and brain surgeries, according to family members. San Ramon Valley firefighters found him unresponsive in his kitchen during a search of the home and removed him from the home but were unable to resuscitate him. The cause of the Saturday morning blaze has centered on a rear bedroom and a possibly smoldering cigarette.
Firefighters said there were no working smoke alarms in the residence, a factor they say may have given Trampetti – who had mobility issues – early warning and a better chance of escaping the blaze.
