Word has reached Miramonte High School and Lamorinda of the loss of one of their own, swept out to sea by a vicious rip current while swimming off Asilomar State Beach Saturday evening.
A spokesman for the 11th Coast Guard District said an air and sea search for the missing swimmer, identified by friends as Bryan Capdevielle, 18, of Moraga, had been called off Sunday morning and declined further comment. Capdevielle was swimming with his 16-year-old brother when they were taken out by a heavy rip current around 5 p.m. Saturday.
A surfer braved strong currents and choppy surf in an attempt to rescue both swimmers, succeeding in retrieving the younger brother and going back for Bryan – only to find that he had gone under.
Volunteers lined the shore in an attempt to locate the missing swimmer, who attended Miramonte before graduating from the Acalanes Center for Independent Study earlier this year. Members of the Monterey and Pacific Grove fire departments, Coast Guard boats and a helicopter also took part in the search, with negative result.
