A trio of civic groups got together to bring a colorful new play area capable of welcoming kids with special needs and are making it available for a firsthand, real-world kid workout this weekend.
The “All Abilities” Playground, first of its kind in the city, opens at its new location in Heather Farms Park on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. The 30,000 square-foot play area was designed to address the climbing and jumping and play needs of all local kids – including the estimated 10 to 20 percent who have some type of special needs. Shock-absorbent, resilient surface pathways make it easier for children with mobility challenges to move around the playground.
The $1.3 million playground is a partnership between the City of Walnut Creek, Contra Costa County, the East Bay Regional Park District and the Walnut Creek Civic Pride Foundation.
Play hard, kids!
