Those ever-present plastic bags people used to trundle home everything from a pack of gum to a three course meal will no longer be offered in Walnut Creek starting today, Thursday. Most people seem to be adapting to the decision.
Anyone who has ever seen abandoned bags lifted and blown like plastic tumbleweeds can tell you that the bags have an extended half life and seem to make it into the most obscure of places. Environmentalists say they most often end up in local creeks and, ultimately, our oceans. Having had one cling to our leg like a jellyfish while bodysurfing in Santa Cruz we can attest to that fact. Scientists say the hardy bags can remain in the environment for years and are hard to break down.
And it was for this reason that the Walnut Creek City Council adopted the Plastic Bag ordinance on March 18, 2014.
We’ll see if confusion reigns or if people do what people usually do in situations like this and adjust. Let us know how it goes.
