Walnut Creek officer resigns, convicted of assault.

A serving Walnut Creek police officer resigned days before he entered a no contest plea to assault and vandalism charges stemming from an early morning baseball bat assault on a woman he felt was vandalizing a family property in Richmond.

Gregory Thompson, 54, of Martinez resigned on Friday after serving 30 years with the Walnut Creek police department, most recently assigned to the department’s Patrol Division. He entered his no contest plea on Monday, accepting a conviction on assault and vandalism charges stemming from the Aug. 16 assault on a woman he thought was vandalizing his father’s property in Richmond – and is due to be sentenced Oct. 10. He faces up to a year jail.

Thompson also admitted to being armed when he confronted and attacked a woman in the 4300 block of Clinton Avenue near San Pablo Avenue about 2 a.m., identifying himself as an off-duty officer when Richmond police – notified by neighbors – descended on his car. Police found the ski mask and gloves Thompson wore during the attack, along with the baseball bat, plastic restraints and two pistols.

Investigators believe Thompson was sitting outside his father’s residence that morning and confronted the woman after he saw her walking in the area, chasing her to her car and beating on her car with the bat. The woman, they said, was merely in the area after her car ran out of gas.

Thompson’s pension status could not be immediately determined, though retiring prior to a criminal conviction may have made it possible for him to retain it.
