In what was meant to be the worst kept secret in town Walnut Creek police and other local law enforcement officers manned a DUI checkpoint on Lawrence Way in the city Friday. Five drivers were arrested but officers are still talking about the one that got away.

Officers from Walnut Creek, San Ramon and Richmond observed 1,002 cars as they travelled through the checkpoint, looking for objective signs of intoxication in those on the road. A total of fifteen drivers were interviewed with five adults arrested for DUI, five adults cited for being unlicensed and one adult cited for driving on a suspended license.

Lt. Lanny Edwards reported that one driver, for reasons still unknown, pushed through the checkpoint, fleeing north onto I-680 and subsequently crashing in Pleasant Hill after California Highway Patrol officers took up the chase. The driver fled the scene of that crash, Edwards reported, and officers would still like to have a chat with them. There were no reported injuries in the chase or crash.
