In the second fatal crash on Highway 24 in less than a week an Oakley man died after crashing his Harley Davidson while riding in the westbound lanes near St. Stephens Drive in Orinda Tuesday.

Authorities could shed no light on why 70-year-old Fred Sprinkle of Oakley drifted across three lanes of traffic and crashed into an embankment at 1:36 p.m. Investigators were hoping the results of an autopsy might help determine if Sprinkle had some sort of medical issue prior to the crash.

An unidentified female passenger was also thrown from the motorcycle but survived the crash, officials said. Both were taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, with Sprinkle dying there later in the afternoon.

The accident was the second fatal accident on Highway 24 in less than a week. On March 6, 17-year-old Anthony Grosso of Danville died after he lost control of his car while traveling east on 24 between the Central Lafayette and Pleasant Hill Road exits. Witnesses said Grosso was traveling at an unsafe speed just prior to his crash.
