Close… But No Burglars For Lafayette PD

Routine patrol turned into some excitement for a Lafayette police officer and no doubt for the three suspected burglars he rolled up on as they were casing a home Tuesday morning.

Details are still a little fuzzy as police are putting events together but it appears that three men, described as black males in their 20s, one wearing a red hat and red shirt, another in a cream shirt and jeans, were apparently casing a home in the city when the officer rolled up.

A third man behind the wheel of a white or cream-colored Ford Explorer collected his two companions and roared off in the direction of Highway 24 with the officer in pursuit, touching off a high speed chase once both cars reached the freeway. The officer terminated the chase due to speed and the danger of civilian injury with the Explorer last seen heading west on Highway 24.

Subsequent information determined that a car matching the Explorer’s description has been spotted in areas of San Bruno and San Francisco hard hit by recent residential burglaries. Officers in Lamorinda have been particularly watchful after a recent spike in home break-ins, apparently by crews of thieves who strike quickly and often in broad daylight.

An observant News24-680 reader apparently captured a picture of the vehicle and the license plates prior to the chase. We’ll post any pictures we can use without jeopardizing the investigation or anyone’s safety.
