OBITUARY: Gerald “Jerry” Varcak

Gerald Varcak

1948 – 2013

Gerald “Jerry” Varcak of Walnut Creek died suddenly while returning from a family vacation recently – leaving a big void in the hearts of his many friends and family members.

An irrepressible local businessman, Jerry was one of five children born to his family in Detroit, Michigan. He graduated from Wayne State University, met his wife, Carol, in the friendly skies of United Air Lines and married her four months after their engagement – their marriage lasting 43 years.

Jerry started out in the travel business and that enterprise took he and Carol from Detroit to St. Louis and on to Los Angeles where he changed careers to work in Marketing for Pacific Bell. After twelve years in Los Angeles, they moved to Walnut Creek where he began a 25 year career with Bank of America as a Vice President – Sourcing Manager. Jerry retired and spent the last few years volunteering. He was a Rotarian for 17 years and member of the Board of Directors and Club Secretary for over 12 years. He had been elected to become president of the Concord Rotary in July 2014.

An avid bass fisherman, Jerry organized fundraisers for the Outdoor Sportsman’s Coalition of California (OSCC) and remained active in the local business scene, finding time to mentor others who shared his interest.

He is survived by his wife, Carol, and children Andy (Erika) Varcak and Melissa Varcak; Grandchildren Eisley and Bohden Varcak and Siblings Barbara Geck, Ron (Lynn) Varcak, Rose Anne Stevens, and Philip (Maureen) Varcak as well as many nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be held on January 4, 2014 at 10:30am at St. Isidore Catholic Church 440 La Gonda, Danville, CA 94526. A Celebration of Life Reception will be held immediately following the mass.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in his memory to Rotary International. Jerry spent much of his time advancing Rotary’s mission to encourage and foster the ideal of service through personal, business, and community life. A tax deductible check may be written and sent to the Rotary Foundation, a 501(c)3, c/o Rotary Club of Concord P.O. Box 6512 Concord, CA 94524.
