A car fire briefly closed Pinehurst Road through Canyon Monday after an SUV left the road and touched off a small blaze. Moraga-Orinda Fire District firefighters report that, mysteriously, two of the car’s five occupants fled the scene.
MOFD Chief Stephen Healy – and several News24-680 readers who rely on Canyon for their westward commutes – said that the fire closed the snake-like back road for a little more than an hour after it was reported at 2:38 a.m. Monday. Responding firefighters found an SUV believe to be a Mitsubishi Montero completely engulfed and a small patch of leaves and grass on fire.
The California Highway Patrol closed the road as fire apparatus maneuvered on the narrow thoroughfare and is investigating the incident. Two of five people believed to have been in the Montero at the time of the crash reportedly fled the scene.
Calls to the CHP asking for additional details on the morning’s crash have not yet been returned.
