Memorial services for longtime Lafayette resident and former San Francisco General Hospital Records Administrator Mary Ann Reed will be held Saturday, October 19, 2013 at 11 a.m. at St. Perpetua Church, 3445 Hamlin Road, Lafayette.
Mrs. Reed died peacefully on Saturday, September 28, 2013 at John Muir Hospital following a brief illness, her family and friends with her at the end.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Richard (Dick) Reed, brother-in-law Jim McCaughey (Louise) and sister-in-law the Rev. Dorothy Curry, as well as the many nieces and nephews; Jim McCaughey (Kim), Paul McCaughey, David McCaughey, Maureen Fix (Paul), Catherine Smyth, Louise Briner, Walter Smyth, Charles Smyth (Julia), Tom Smyth, Ed Smyth (Valerie), Ellen Staples (Bob), Tim Curry (Denise) and Elise Curry (Kathy Dolan). She also leaves behind 14 great nieces and nephews, cousins, a host of lifelong friends.
Mrs. Reed was born in Butte, Mont. on April 2, 1931 to Mary Catherine (Harrington) Smyth and Edward Patrick Smyth. She was predeceased by her parents, brothers Jere Smyth (Mary Bert), and Dr. James Smyth (Pam) and sister Louise McCaughey.
Mrs. Reed graduated from Girls Central High in Butte, Mont. and went on to receive her BS degree in Medical Records Administration from Seattle University in 1953. She met Dick in San Francisco and the couple was married at St. Brigid’s Church on June 9, 1957. Mrs. Reed worked as a Medical Records Administrator at San Francisco General Hospital for 38 years while Dick worked as an international buyer for Cost Plus. They relocated to Lafayette in 1970.
Family members say she will be missed beyond words.
