Blair Frank, a Walnut Creek native and senior English major at Whitman University in Washington state, has won the Hosokawa award for Opinion/Editorial writing for a piece he submitted to Whitman’s student newspaper.

The award was hand-delivered by Terry Tang, deputy editorial page editor for the New York Times, during a visit to Whitman in March.

Frank’s article was featured in the Pioneer, Whitman’s student-run newspaper, and pushed Whitman’s student government to provide better student engagement opportunities.

Frank is the son of Debbie Frank and Ed Hanley of Walnut Creek. He is a 2009 graduate of The Athenian School.
